Before applications or excavation

Start with the right building office.

Building permits are generally handled by the municipality, not one countywide permit counter. An Albany mailing address does not necessarily mean City of Albany jurisdiction. Delmar is in Bethlehem; Latham is in the Town of Colonie. The Village of Colonie has its own building department.

Confirm the property. Give the office the street address and tax parcel information.
Describe the whole scope. Ask about building and zoning approvals, drainage, historic review and any other applicable permits.
Agree on responsibilities. Establish who submits plans, obtains approvals, arranges inspections and closes out the permit before work starts.
